Michael Estabrook
Marine Biology, my first lovePhytoplankton, Euglena, Brine Shrimp, the Sargasso Sea, Horseshoe Crabs,
Tidal Pools, Kelp, the Coral Reef, Deep Sea Vents, Tiger Sharks, Walruses,
Humpback Whales . . . I began my journey as a biologist but quickly got
blown off track. Now turning back in time remains only a dream: working on a
boat, collecting samples, performing environmental analyses, as one with the
open sea, wind and sun, the Sirens calling me as they called to Ulysses. But
it is too late, I am too old to begin anew, it's simply too impractical. I
recall (my heart glowing in the dusky sun) Dr. Berkowitz, professor of
Marine Biology at Adelphi University back when I was still a mere tadpole in
life, and his excitement for the ocean, his boundless dedication to
exploring the great primeval mysteries of life. I wish I could return to
school, find Dr. Berkowitz again, trail along in his wake like a gull behind
a fishing trawler, getting the whole damn thing right this time.
Bio:
Michael Estabrook is a Marketing Communications Manager for a tiny division of a gigantic company, for whom going into an office every day is excruciating. The stuffy air, the florescent lights are killing him. Thankfully he can retire in 10 or 15 years. But he still thinks that somehow he's got to get himself on some boat collecting phytoplankton, or into the rich brown hills of Montana searching for TRex bones. Then again, maybe he simply should've stayed on Northfield Avenue where he belonged and learned to fix cars like his Daddy did.
