"Fishing for smelt in the surf -Trinidad Yurok"

Denise Enck

          afternoon, hwy 1

  up the coast
        winding cliffs of ocean
     so much further on

          old oak pressed back
             baby at the breast
                   of an old cotton dress

     behind the kitchen
                      a sign, a wood -

           windows don't open
           & papers fall out
                 the clouds or was it

          something dreamed
       under the steep below

  - headlands fallen from the sea -

creekside rain
      aside the empty,
   rough-hewn benches in a row

          (untitled)

rain embroiders
the tide
in the silver-edged
           Dungeness morning

     the heron's wing
             & my eye
      are the same

                    hwy 101, ore.

dune
     rumors
                                              coast rhody
                                              rain
                                azalea
                                    mind

     high grass
                       bending low
               wet at the roots
& waiting
