Robert Cohen

At Smelt Sands Beach

Dead mastadon of rock
driven from the cliff
to lie obliquely on a silken pillow,
trunk still uplifted: Did you appeal
to angels with your Gabriel-horn,
or were you just waving off a sniffle
when the sun set funereally--
the shore your tabernacle,
your desert the sea?
